Classic tablet or kids tablet?
Given the multitude of tablets offered, and their variable price, it is difficult to choose between those intended for children and traditional models for adults. Should we choose a special children’s tablet with limited functionality or an adult tablet?
Kids tablets allow children to play, watch cartoons that are often already installed, and read or listen to stories. They very often have a built-in camera and can sometimes receive a memory card to increase internal storage. Without access to the Internet, they do not require parental control.
The tablets for adults are not, basically, intended for children because of the possibility of going on the Internet. However, they offer many educational applications to download for the child to play, read, learn his multiplication tables for example. With these tablets, the child will have the opportunity to take more beautiful photos and make videos.
Price level, they cost more than twice the average of tablets for kids.
What to consider when buying tablets for kids
Choosing a kids tablet has become difficult as the offer is large and the features different. Here is a series of criteria to study before making a purchase:
Power: If you are looking for a powerful tablet, you will probably be disappointed with most children’s models. Sometimes you have to be patient between two application launches. Devices intended for the youngest are often the slowest. Some brands have made an effort by designing more powerful tablets. But nothing to do with the racing beasts offered by Apple, Samsung or others.
Robustness: the shelves intended for the youngest are often protected by a shell. You can drop your LeapPad or your Amazon Fire HD 8. A priori, they will get by without a problem. Convenient for the little ones, often a bit clumsy. Please note that more efficient models are also more fragile.
Internet connection or not? Some models of kids tablets do not offer an Internet connection. No risk of a child getting lost on the web. That said, rest assured, all kids tablets have an effective parental control system and powerful filters.
Batteries or batteries? Several kids tablets powered by batteries are still sold. This is the case with the LeapPad 2+. If you choose this type of model, buy rechargeable batteries or get an adapter, when available.
Kids tablets are more economical but will probably have a shorter lifespan (in terms of evolution). It is also a turnkey solution with pre-installed applications and easy-to-manage parental controls. An asset if you know nothing about it. They are also designed to withstand shocks. Note that models like the Gulli or the Lexibook Deluxe / Master are closer to adult models.
The tablets for adults will be a little more expensive but will offer much greater prospects for development. You will find as many – or even more – applications for your child but you will need to put your hands to a minimum in the settings of your tablet. Indeed, they are often delivered empty of content, without parental controls configured. Regarding this last point, if the tablet does not offer any control system, you will find dedicated applications on the Google Play Store or on the App Store. Last point to consider, the fragility of these machines. Unlike kids tablets, conventional tablets are not particularly designed to withstand shocks. It is imperative to equip yourself with a protective accessory.
